When to fertilize your lawn is the question which every homeowner asks. Fertilizers provide rich and healthy non-toxic and organic chemicals which not only do the job deep down to the lowest layer of soil but also help in enhancing the visual appeal of your lawn with lots of greenery, fruits and flowers to be seen in the garden. The time when you should go for the fertilization of your lawn depends on the type of grass in your garden. Grass is known to need nutrients and nitrogen for its growth and for this purpose they need to be fertilized timely.
The determinants of timely fertilization of your grass:
The following determinants or the pointers will indicate that when and on what conditions you should go for the fertilization of your lawn:
· The warm season grasses such as St. Augustine and the Bermuda are known to grow swiftly in the warm or hot weather. For such types of grasses, you are required to feed them with fertilizers somewhere around late spring to the early fall season. An early fertilization must be avoided as that can trigger the growth of weeds that belong to cold season and obviously, you don’t want that.
· Cool season grasses such as the tall fescue and the Kentucky bluegrass grows rapidly in the cooler temperatures of the spring and fall season. In the places with mild winter temperatures/ climate, such cool season grasses can grow well throughout the winter season. Fall time is considered the most apt time for feeding the cool season grasses with the fertilizer. But, never do it early in the spring season as that can have a negative impact.
· The cool season grasses usually stay green for the majority of the year, but always avoid fertilizing them during the midsummer season heat. It has been observed that the growth is very slow during the peak hot season and fertilizing the lawn during peak summer season can weaken the grass. The only exceptions in this case are the lawns which are at some high elevation where the summer temperature is relatively milder.
· For having a better visual appeal of your lawn, it is advised by the experts to fertilize your garden one in every 6 to 8 months. But, if you are too lazy or not looking for some higher maintenance then it is advised to frequently mow your lawn.
